In October 2018, Dr Thomson Mpinganjira became Malawi’s first entrepreneur to be nominated for two prestigious African business awards. The FDH Financial Holdings Limited founder was nominated in both Entrepreneur of the Year and Business Leader of the Year categories, representing Southern Africa at the All Africa Business Leaders Awards (AABLA).

Led by CNBC Africa Non-Executive Director Sam Bhembe, the AABLA judging panel evaluated hundreds of applications, using stringent criteria to select the finalists. Thomson Mpinganjira was selected for his impressive accomplishments in building the FDH Financial Holdings Limited business empire.

Dr Thomson Mpinganjira said he was “surprised but honoured” to receive such high-level recognition. Speaking with the Nyasa Times, he explained that his greatest desire for Malawi and Africa was to see as many individuals as possible rise up, unlocking their potential and achieving greatness in their lives.

Thomson Mpinganjira said that he had always wanted to contribute in his own way and intended to carry on doing so. He said that being recognised at such a high level while doing something he is passionate about came as a great surprise and honour for him, his family, and Malawi, acknowledging that he owed it to God.

As he pointed out, entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. The achievement of greatness requires dogged determination, perseverance, and persistence. Dr Mpinganjira acknowledged that the nomination reminded him how far he and his team had come in terms of building the organisation that is today known as FDH Financial Holdings Limited.

Other finalists included in the AABLA Entrepreneur of the Year category included Discovery Insure (South Africa) Executive Director and founder Thembalihle Baloyi, and El Escrow Internacional (Zimbabwe) founder and Group CEO Collen Tapfumaneyi, among others.

As founder of FDH Financial Holdings Limited, Dr Mpinganjira has built an extensive financial empire throughout Malawi, taking the country’s financial infrastructure to a whole new level.

Upon gaining his ACCA Qualification, Thomson Mpinganjira joined Deloitte. He became a skilled networker, making many contacts during his five-year tenure with the company that proved very significant in his future career. After serving in various corporate accounting roles, Dr Mpinganjira set out in business alone, creating several successful companies. An accountant turned stockbroker, he is responsible for developing the Malawi Stock Exchange in 2000, as well as opening FDH Bank, his own commercial bank, headquartered in Malawi’s second biggest city – Blantyre – in 2008.
